The Matter of the Fight, 2017/2019
- Oil on canvas
- 198 x 442 cm
- Corrida
“The Matter of the Fight” belongs to the group of monumental triptychs that close the Corrida series. The painting moves away from depicting a particular event and concentrates on the essence of the fight itself – its energy, rhythm and physical presence. It is not an illustration of confrontation, but an attempt to capture the forces born at the moment of greatest tension.
The composition is built from abrupt painterly gestures and a multilayered matter of paint in which dynamic bands of white, black, red and blue continually intersect and permeate one another. Forms appear only for an instant, to vanish immediately into the dense structure of the painting. The gesture does not describe movement – it becomes movement, and the painterly matter takes on the role of a participant in the event.
The triptych goes beyond references to the corrida itself. The fight becomes a universal human experience – a space where instinct and consciousness, courage and fear, destruction and creative energy collide. The painting leaves the viewer inside a constantly pulsating process whose outcome remains unresolved.
