Secret Souls, 2016

Secret Souls grew out of encounters with the people and culture of Iran. The painting does not refer to particular figures, but to the invisible layers of memory, emotion and history that remain hidden beneath the surface of everyday life.

The dense painterly matter and the overlapping gestures create a structure resembling a network of mutually permeating traces. The individual layers do not compete with one another but coexist, revealing the complexity of human experience and the many voices of a culture.
