Great La Gomera grew out of the experience of an island whose volcanic landscape, dense vegetation and shifting light create a space of exceptional perceptual intensity. The painting is a record of the memory of that landscape and of its emotional impact.
The composition is built from vertical rhythms and interpenetrating layers of green, blue and luminous yellow. The individual forms remain ambiguous, suspended between landscape and abstraction, so that the viewer’s attention gradually shifts from recognising motifs to experiencing colour, space and time.
Here abstraction becomes a means of concentrating experience.
