Abstraction No. 21 develops a painterly language inspired by the geological structure of a volcanic landscape. Dense, overlapping layers of matter evoke processes in which successive sediments, fractures and displacements form a record of time and continuous transformation.

The painting does not refer to the appearance of nature, but to the way it comes into being. The painterly process becomes an equivalent of geological processes, building an autonomous structure in which matter retains the traces of its own history.
