Yellow Abstraction, Diptych 01 & 02, 2016

  • Oil on canvas
  • 240 x 220 cm
  • Australia

The painting was inspired by a flight over the vast expanses of Australia, where a shift in perspective reduces the landscape to rhythm, light and colour. The monumental scale of the continent and the experience of space were transformed into an abstract composition built on colour relationships and the structure of the painterly matter. The diptych form underlines the continuity of the image and the sweep of the observed landscape, creating a sense of space extending beyond the edges of the canvas. In this change of scale the landscape ceases to be a place and becomes a structure.
