Abstraction No. 30 opens a new formal direction within the series. The elaborate, multilayered matter of the earlier works gives way to larger, synthetic planes with a clearly defined structure and intensity of colour.

Reducing the number of elements strengthens the force of the composition. Pure relationships of red, green and ultramarine become the primary means of building space, giving the painting a dynamism that arises from colour rather than from the density of matter.
